Happy New Year, Lovies! Two months into the New Year and things are already so hectic...especially this temperamental weather. I can never keep heads or tails of what to expect. Snow, sleet, rain? Oh my! Regardless of the type of precipitation, I can count on being accompanied by my fellow, unsuspecting naturals in the marathon for shelter, or on some occasions, fashioning the plastic grocery bag as a cap in attempts to duck whatever liquid is falling from the sky. So with that vivid picture, I ask: "Can You Stand the Rain?"....And personally, no..no, I cannot. And here are five reasons why!

I know the politically correct term is no longer Marley Hair, but Marley Maintenance has a nicer ring to it than does Afro Twist Braid Maintenance. Anywho the message remains the same! Here are a few tips to maintain and retain the most growth in that protective twist or braid style with added hair or none at all! Installation: Whether installing yourself or getting the style done, make sure to coat your hair with a leave-in conditioner of your choice and a cream moisturizer (particularly if the leave-in is water-based). I personally like to spritz the 'Marley' Hair with my Taliah Wajid Moisture Clenz and spread it through the the length of the each strand to avoid that excessive drying feeling. Scalp Stimulation: Massage, Massage, Massage that scalp gyal! This step at anytime and often during your journey will definitely stimulate growth, as the gentle massage will increase blood circulation to the scalp. Gently massage the entirety of your crown everyday for at least 3-5 minutes. In order to provide moisture, use an essential oil (i.e.: lavender, rosemary, etc.) if you feel your scalp is dry. *These Marley twists were 4 wks old* Moisture: Now that we've covered our scalps let’s talk about those strands. Section off your locks into 4-6 sections and moisturize the entire length of your hair with leave-in, and coat with an oil of your choice*. I like to use my Lavender Jamaican Black Castor Oil (sparingly though as it can be very heavy) when doing this step to promote even more growth. Do this three (3) times a week. * Don't rub down the strand. Instead blot/squeeze down the strand to avoid as much frizz as possible. Cleansing: Washing your hair with the twists/braids installed can cause major frizz, maybe matting at the root and possible damage to your hair. Avoid this and try a cleansing spray on the scalp like the Moisture Clenz mentioned above. Spritz all up and around the scalp once a week! SleepyTime: Using a bandana, pull all the hair to the top of your head. Use a satin scarf to secure the back and cover those edges or just sleep on a satin pillow and style as usual in the A.M. Follow these tips and maintaining this protective style will be a piece of cake. Let us know how these tips help you! Sincerely Yours, Sista Jay March 1st was supposed to mark the official change in my health and wellness regimen, but being the procrastinator I always claim not to be, my ambitious health and wellness pursuit kick started on March 15th! Now that winter is finally making its departure, and the packed on belly fat seems fruitless (no pun intended) in keeping me warm during the cold months, it’s officially time to begin a true, concerted effort towards working on my summer body goals. So for those who’d like to join your girl on the train to optimum health, here’s a quick run through! First, let’s address any notion of inadequacy. Embrace your own beauty inside and out. We are beautiful despite any weight, and certainly despite any image of beauty society repeatedly tries to instill in us. I’ve decided to change my ways to improve my health and gain back all the muscle I’ve lost since my extremely fit, soccer-playing days (which you can somewhat envision from the picture on the left). In order to do this, I plan to be more mindful of what I put into my body; stay active, and make time for mental health and wellness. Now, time to set some first month’s (well, about two weeks worth of) goals!
Some Don’ts:
Finally, you’ll want to maintain your luscious locs through all this sweat you’re about to experience. Protective styles are the perfect “go-to”! From Senegalese Twists to the indestructible up do, you can go hard in your workout and encourage hair growth if that’s your goal. But if you’re not a huge fan of protective styling, any style that keeps the hair off your neck should suffice. Just be sure to cleanse the scalp and hair at least once a week and moisturize daily! Now that we’ve outlined a few goals, remember to uplift each other. We’re all in this together! Be sure to check out our Instagram and Tumblr along with the website for some weekly updates and words of inspiration and a chance to share your own experiences! Yours truly, Sista Jay Goals!!!Many people question whether a wash-n-go is a safe style for their hair during the winter but i’m here to say it is perfectly okay to wear a wash-n-go during the winter. I love my wash-n-go curls too much to not rock it for a whole season! In this article, I will list out some key tips to protect your hair from freezing together or breaking.
Now Naturalistas, if you follow these basic tips. There’s no reason why a wash-n-go would be a bad style to rock during the winter. Just remember to always keep your hair moisturized to beat the bad weather from trying to take away your hair’s moisture and only go outside when your hair is completely dry!! ~Sammi D |
